How can I program a default utility gateway/router address in my
RG?
The latest RG setup software allows specification of the default router. When using V.90 or ADSL PPPoE the default router is automatically obtained via the point to point protocol. In case of ISDN/DSL, Cable or LAN infrastructure the default router is either obtained automatically, or it can be entered manually: When selecting ISDN/DSL, Cable or LAN infrastructure, the RG Set-up utility provides a selection for IP Address. By setting it to automatic (in stead of pre-defined) the RG obtains the default router automatically. By setting it to pre-defined the RG setup software allows the default router to be entered manually.

My Cable service provider asks me for the Ethernet MAC address of the RG unit. Where can I find this?
Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) that provide internet access via a cable modem, ask for your RG's Ethernet MAC Address. This is typically required to have the ISP systems assign an IP Address to your RG automatically (typically via a DHCP server). Without this address your RG will not receive an IP Address which will prevent the RG from communicating to the internet. Please contact your ISP for more information.

top
How do I connect to the Internet with the RG-1000?
With one or more laptop and desktop computers connected to the RG-1000, it will be able to automatically dial-in to the ISP when ever access to the Internet is requested. The ORiNOCO Home Networking System includes an Installation Wizard. The RG-1000 contains Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) functions to make it easy to set up your network and Internet Connection. The DHCP automatically configures your IP address.

How do I share my Internet access among multiple users?
With one or more laptop and desktop computers connected to the RG-1000, it will be able to automatically dial-in to the ISP whenever access to the Internet is requested. The RG supports Network Address Translation (NAT) to enable multiple clients to access the internet concurrently.
Back to
top
Can I disable encryption?
No, encryption in the RG-1000 can not be disabled.

top
Do I need a firewall when using the RG-1000?
In general a firewall is not needed, unless you want a high form of security. When NAT is enabled it acts as a pseudo firewall, giving your network some protection because your systems can't be directly reached from the Internet. A firewall is advised in case the RG is being used in bridge mode with NAT disabled to access the Internet. In this case there's no protection being given by the RG, although an external modem might still provide protection. A cable modem typically operates as a transparent bridge. This allows your systems to be reached directly from the Internet. Also all local Ethernet traffic is broadcast to the ISP. For this reason it is highly recommended to enable NAT or use a firewall.

How can I set up the RG using it as a DHCP Client?
The RG must be configured as DHCP Client when a station in the LAN provides DHCP Server functionality. The RG can be set up as DHCP Client when access to the internet is reached via ISDN/DSL, Cable or a LAN infrastructure. In these configurations the RG Set-up utility provides a selection for IP Address. By setting it to automatic (in stead of pre-defined) the RG is set up as DCHP client. In case of V.90 or ADSL PPPoE the point to point protocol provides the IP address, so DHCP client behaviour is always disabled.

Can I use the RG-1000 for VPN access?
The RG 1000 supports VPN in passthrough mode. In this mode all data transport between the ISP and LAN is passed through as if the external modem was directly connected to the LAN client. In passthrough mode the ability to share a single internet connection by multiple LAN stations at the same time not possible. Note that this solution only works for modems that support passthrough (E.g. most cable and ADSL modems). To configure passthrough mode the following steps need to be taken:
-
Start the RG Set-up Utility.
-
Choose type of installation
-
Choose No internet (Now the RG is put into bridge mode with NAT disabled.)
-
Connect the RG via Ethernet to the modem.
-
Build the network connection on the LAN client like described in the manual from your internet service provider.
When this link, from the client via the wireless bridge to the provider, is up, it is possible to start an IPSec, PPTP or L2TP VPN connection. For more details about the VPN setup look into the documentation that comes with your VPN package. Note that because NAT is switched off that it is advisable to install a firewall. See also FAQ Do I need a firewall when using the RG-1000?

I changed the encryption key of my RG and now I cannot access the RG anymore.
When you changed the encryption key of the RG it needs to be changed for your wireless client cards as well. If the wireless client card is an ORiNOCO card the encryption key is automatically updated on the station performing the encryption key change with the RG setup utility. For all other LAN clients it needs to be changed manually. To check if the encryption key is correct, open the ORiNOCO Client Manager window (only available for ORiNOCO client cards).
-
Encryption key correct: The Client Manager is displaying ORiNOCO RG-1000 as the Access point name and the icon is be an RG.
-
Encryption key incorrect: The Client Manager is displaying the RG’s MAC address and the icon is a gray AP. To change the encryption key for all wireless LAN clients manually do the following:
-
Change the encryption key in the ORiNOCO Client Manager with the key you typed in the RG Setup Utility.
-
For all non ORiNOCO 802.11 client cards consult the manual on how to change the encryption key If you still cannot access the RG, perform the Soft Reload (see the Online Help of your RG Setup Utility).

I cannot connect with my RG, because of an incorrect IP address.
When the RG Setup Utility pops up the error message saying the IP address or password is incorrect and you know that your password is correct or not used, you should check the IP address on your station (see: How can I check my station’s IP address?). The IP address displayed in the error message of the RG Setup Utility is the RG’s IP address. The IP address of the RG and the client station should be in the same range. If this is not the case do the following:
-
If the RG assigns IP addresses to clients (DHCP server is enabled), release and renew your station’s IP address with the Windows IP configuration tool ("winipcfg.exe" or "ipconfig.exe").
-
Otherwise (DHCP server is disabled) set the station’s IP address to a fixed IP address that is one higher than the IP address of the RG. For example: IP address RG:152.110.49.114 (displayed in the message) IP address client:152.110.49.115

What is the ORiNOCO AS-2000?
The AS-2000 Access Server is the high-security infrastructure offering of the ORiNOCO family. It provides per-user per-session security, RADIUS-based user authentication, and other features make it a high security local access server.
Back
to top
What type of security is offered with the AS-2000?
Two key capabilities are provided by the AS-2000: authentication of end users via RADIUS, and an encrypted wireless link with per-user per-session keys, so that each user's session is in effect isolated from the others over the wireless link. Per-session keys are generated as needed, to eliminate the advance distribution of keys. The encryption of over-the-air data is done in software, using RC-4 algorithms, the fastest software encryption algorithms currently available.

How does an Access Server system work?
The PC/laptop computer is equipped with an IEEE 802.11(b) ORiNOCO PC Card. The ORiNOCO AS Client software is installed once and is then ready to run by clicking on a desktop icon. After clicking on the icon, the user’s computer and the AS-2000 exchange messages and establish a key that will be used for this session only (it happens almost instantaneously). The user is prompted for Login Name and Password. Upon positive authentication by a RADIUS server, connection is established and traffic is let through. The ORiNOCO Access Server networks are remotely manageable using the configuration and management tool: ORiNOCO AS Manager.
Back
to top
How fast is the wireless connection?
